If you’ve seen the episode already, you know I promised a written breakdown of how the Rock Paper Scissors mechanism works.

This is that written breakdown.

The Rock Paper Scissors mechanism relocates the two participating players to the correct solution platform based on which selection the players made. There are nine possible outcomes in Rock Paper Scissors, so there are nine solution platforms on the map.

The map is divided into three towers, as demonstrated in the following image:

Let’s walk through three possible outcomes on this map: one where the blue player wins, one where the red player wins, and one where both players tie.

OUTCOME #1: A BLUE PLAYER VICTORY

Let’s pretend the blue player chose rock and the red player chose scissors.

- Both players start at [A] and fall to [1].

Base player traits have a damage modifier and melee damage of 0%–this prevents players from being able to destroy land mines. However, the red player is inside a trait zone that increases both values. So, [1] represents a trap door built with a pair of landmines that only the red player can open (destroy).

- The trap door at [1] is opened by the red player.

- Both players will fall to [4].

Same thing–a trap door built with a pair of landmines, but this time only the blue player can open it.

- The trap door at [4] is opened by the blue player.

- Both players will fall to [D].

Platform [D] is the correct solution platform for the choice of both players–blue rock, red scissors. Once the players arrive at [D], the blue player will be able to shoot and kill the red player, scoring a point and winning the round.

The mechanism works the same for blue paper/red rock and blue scissors/red paper.

OUTCOME #2: A RED PLAYER VICTORY

Let’s pretend the blue player chose rock and the red player chose paper.

- The blue player will fall from [A] to [1], while the red player will fall from [C] to [3].

- The trap door at [3] is opened by the red player.

- The red player will fall to [6].

Now both players are stuck. Blue is at [1], red is at [6].

At the 30 second mark, teleporters spawn and move the players, based on their elevation, to a location on the second tower. The blue player is at the top red trap door, [1], so they will be moved to the top blue position on the second tower, [G]. The red player is at the top blue trap door, [6], so they will be moved to the top red position on the second tower, [G].

- Both players will fall from [G] to [7].

- The trap door at [7] is opened by the red player.

- Both players will fall to [8].

- The trap door at [8] is opened by the blue player.

- Both players will fall to [H].

Platform [H] is the correct solution platform for the choice of both players–blue rock, red scissors. Once the players arrive at [H], the red player will be able to shoot and kill the blue player, scoring a point and winning the round.

The mechanism works the same for blue paper/red scissors and blue scissors/red rock.

SCENARIO #3: A TIE

Let’s pretend the blue player chose rock and the red player chose rock.

- The blue player will fall from [A] to [1], while the red player will fall from [B] to [2].

- The trap door at [2] is opened by the red player.

- The red player will fall to [5].

Now both players are stuck. Blue is at [1], red is at [5].

At the 30 second mark, teleporters spawn and move the players, based on their elevation, to a location on the second tower. The blue player is at the top red trap door, [1], so they will be moved to the top blue position on the second tower, [G]. The red player is at the bottom blue trap door, [5], so they will be moved to the bottom red position on the second tower, [K].

- The blue player will fall to [7].

- The red player will fall to [11].

- The trap door at [11] is opened by the red player.

- The red player will fall to [12].

Now both players are stuck again. Blue is at [7], red is at [12].

At the 45 second mark, another series of teleporters spawn and move the players to the correct location on the third tower. In this case, the blue player will be moved to [M] and the red player will be moved to [M] as well.

- Both players will fall to [N].

Platform [N] is the correct solution platform for the choice of both players–blue rock, red rock. Once the players arrive at [N], they will be inside a soft kill boundary. After 10 seconds, both players will be killed and the next round will begin.

The mechanism works the same for blue paper/red paper and blue scissors/red scissors.
